Sabine Beyerle, Wiesenstücke – Painting
Sabine Beyerle, Wiesenstücke / Meadow Pieces – Painting
In the exhibition WIESENSTÜCKE we show current works on the theme of nature by the Berlin-based artist Sabine Beyerle. As in the macroscopic view of an insect’s flight, the eye is immersed in the colours and structures of a meadow landscape.
For some time now, Berlin-based artist Sabine Beyerle (*1975) has been dealing with the themes of space and landscape in painting. Her current works increasingly turn to deep insights into nature. She seeks places of wildness where nature reclaims its space and human intervention has little permanence. The artist is more interested in the inconspicuous, forgotten places, the ordinary buttercup by the wayside, the structures of withered stalks in the wind, an empty bird’s nest or a worn wing chair abandoned in the landscape than in well-tended garden landscapes. The artist uses her own photographs as source material and gradually transfers them into painting, similar to a collage. Multi-layered, often multi-perspective views emerge.
Pouring paint, structures that take on a life of their own, ornaments and dissolution are always at the beginning of her work process. This creates an abstract pictorial background that invites chance and chaos into her work. Traces of this background remain and penetrate the more realistic surface like holes. The gestural pours of paint interweave with the more concrete or even ornamental elements of the picture’s foreground. The supposed spots and omissions float like free forms in the pictorial space and offer insights into the background of the painting and the painting process. At the same time, their function remains open; they can stand for movement, wind, energy or growth, but also for destruction and transience.
In terms of art history, the meadow pieces refer to Albrecht Dürer’s “The Great Piece of Turf” – one of the most famous studies of nature in German art history – and still tell their story of growth and decay, of the importance of engaging with the details, colours and structures that nature offers.
