Ivar Kaasik, before now – Paintings

In the exhibition “before now”, we are showing an insight into the work of the renowned Estonian artist Ivar Kaasik. The exhibition focuses on older and new large-format abstract paintings by the artist, who takes us on a journey through time and space characterised by subtle complexity and profound reflection on the past and present.

Ivar Kaasik is known for his masterful use of monochrome colours and strict geometry, which uniquely express his personal interpretation of chaos and order, death and rebirth. Within this exhibition, his works such as “Brokenlight” (2023), “Broken World” (2023), “Broken Landscape” (2022), “before now I” (2024) and “Yellow Green” (1998) occupy a prominent position.

“Brokenlight” and “Broken World” from 2023 are powerful depictions of a shattered reality in which the lines between light and shadow, hope and despair are blurred. “Broken Landscape” from 2022, on the other hand, offers a view of a world in upheaval, in which the landscapes are characterised by unexpected ruptures and distortions.

The more recent works, such as “before now I” from 2024, reflect Ivar Kaasik’s ongoing exploration of time and its transience, while “Yellow Green” from 1998 offers an insight into his earlier creative period.

Using the technique of oil paint on canvas, the artist succeeds in depicting complex ideas in a simple form, inviting the astonished viewer into a world that seems both familiar and yet alien. “before now” invites visitors to look at yesterday and today through the eyes of Ivar Kaasik and to be inspired by his unique art.

The abstract paintings are complemented by some photorealistic works to show the range of artistic creation and to discover the diversity and depth of the work of an outstanding artist.
